Pop to musical theatre is not an easy leap! The Thenardiers got some of the loudest applause. Katie Hall was a sweet “older Cosette”, and Gareth Gates impressed me in his ability to switch the type of music he was singing. John Owen Jones did a wonderful portrayal of Val Jean, always wronged, misunderst ood, constantly hunted by the equally brilli ant Earl Carpenter as Javert (my favourite character), so I was pleased to see him play it so well, particularly in his rendition of “Stars”, and his soliloqu y. * I did think that the acting was really good. *All names researched from the Internet, as I didn’t have a program.
